TUoS RDM Survey - some initial data

You may remember that during February 2014 we ran an institutional RDM Survey, gathering views and requirements on the RDM practices of our research community.

As part of identifying where we need to focus our attention regarding RDM service delivery (gaps and opportunities) this has proved to be a really useful and valuable user- requirements gathering exercise. Many thanks to all of you who responded and I thought I would share some of the initial results. An analysis of all the full responses is currently underway and we shall be producing a detailed report later in the Summer.

These results are based on the 433 complete responses.

How many respondents?
433 full responses
213 incomplete responses
646 in total

Faculty response rate
Over a third of responses were from the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health and a third of these was from one School.

What types of research data are you creating?
90% of you are creating documents and 75% are creating spreadsheets and on average you are creating 5 different types of research data.

Where are you storing your research data?
Some responses included:
64% using portable storage device
61%  local disk
42% Web based service
35% on paper

Estimate the volume of reseach data you expect to create during your current research activity
Some responses included:
28% 1 - 50 GB
17% more than a terabyte.

Did you develop a data management plan (DMP) for your current research activity?
25% had created a DMP.

Are you aware of any RDM expectations or requirements from your funder?
40% said they were aware of their funders research data requirements.

Training needs
Majority of respondents were definitely or possibly interested in training on all the topics listed in the survey.

  • 67% interested in training on funders requirements and RDM
  • 74% on developing a data management plan (DMP)
  • 72% on documenting your research data
  • 72% on storing your research data
  • 71% on sharing your research data
  • 70% on copyright and IP and your research data
  • 66% on data citation

Topics not listed but mentioned as areas that require further guidance and training included encryption and research data security.

Data discoverabilityand data sharing

  • 60% are willing to share their data at the end of their project. This response was fairly even across both Faculty and research role but restrictions on its use were required
  • 62% agreed/strongly agreed that they would be willing to share data across a broad group of researchers
  • 86% agreed/strongly agreed that it was important that their data is cited when used by other researchers
  • 54% agreed/strongly agreed that it is appropriate to create new datasets from shared data
So a busy time ahead identifying opportunities and priorities for future RDM service delivery and further training and advocacy.

Research Data Alliance Europe - opportunity for early career researchers and scientists

Are you an Early Career European Researcher & Scientist working with data? If so, the Research Data Alliance  Europe is offering travel and subsistence support to attend the RDA Fourth Plenary Meeting which will be held in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, from 22 - 24 September 2014.

If you are interested in applying you need to satisfy the following criteria:


  • Currently engaged in Bachelor, Masters, PhD or Post Doc studies
  • Study is conducted in a higher education or research institution based in Europe
  • Studies are of relevance & pertinence to RDA, and cover at least one of the Working or Interest Group subjects
The RDA working groups cover a wide range of topics and interests, including, data citation, data interoperability, big data analytics, biodiversity data integration, digital practices in history, ethics and social aspects of data, publishing data, research data provenance, and many more. 

The deadline for interested applicants is 30th June 2014 and further details regarding the application process is available from the RDA Europe Financial Support Programme for RDA Plenary 4 Web page.
